Artwork detail

[art #302]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.

The 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1 was a game-changer in the world of sportbikes, setting new standards for performance, handling, and design. Powered by a 998cc inline-four engine, the R1 produced an impressive 150bhp, allowing it to reach speeds of over 170mph. What set the R1 apart was its revolutionary chassis design, which featured a compact "stacked" gearbox that allowed for a shorter wheelbase and more centralized mass. This design gave the R1 incredible agility and responsiveness, making it a benchmark for handling in the sportbike world. The bike's aggressive styling, with sharp lines, twin headlights, and a minimalist tail section, set the tone for modern sportbike design. The 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1 quickly became the bike to beat in the liter-class segment, earning a reputation for its combination of raw power, nimble handling, and cutting-edge technology. It remains a landmark model in Yamaha's history, beloved by riders and collectors alike.
Unlike most of my paintings which are in oils, this one of a friend's bike was painted in gouache just to try out the paint.
